  224. Installing MAPIT:
  225.  
  226.     The first time you run it, MAPIT will create a special directory
  227.     structure under the current directory of your harddrive. Assuming
  228.     that you unzipped MAPIT20.ZIP in a directory called MAPIT, your
  229.     harddrive will contain the following structure:
  230.  
  231.         MAPIT         -  executables and data
  232.             DBFS      -  point data .dbf's
  233.             DBQS      -  queries and supporting .dbf's
  234.             EXAMPLES  -  supporting data for examples
  235.  
  236.     Run MAPIT by entering "mapit":
  237.  
  238.         C:\MAPIT>  mapit
  239.  
  240.     MAPIT will open the DEMO.MP3 file and use it as data.  Furthermore,
  241.     MAPIT will open EXTENDED.MP3 to display the Columbus Demo.  When you
  242.     are tired of it, delete EXTENDED.MP3.  Like a dismembered star fish,
  243.     EXTENDED.MP3 will be regenerated as a null length file the next time
  244.     you run MAPIT.
  245.

  247. A Quick Demo:
  248.  
  249.     MAPIT comes up in the Standard World View the first time you run.
  250.  
  251.         <Tab> to zoom in on the Gulf of Mexico.  (You are tabing
  252.         backward through a two-level history.)
  253.  
  254.         <Tab> again to zoom in on Florida.
  255.  
  256.         Click to check "DISPLAY/All Features" and click "ZOOM/To Std
  257.         World" to return to the beginning but with maximum features
  258.         displayed.
  259.  
  260.         Again <Tab> twice.
  261.  
  262.     After you've cycled through this simple demonstration, you
  263.     may want to reduce the number of Features DISPLAYed and
  264.     begin experimenting by "ZOOMing/In by Corners" and using the
  265.     <Esc>, <Pg Up/Dn>, and arrow keys as outlined in MAPIT.DOC.
  266.  
  267.         "ZOOM/To Std Word" and check out the Columbus Demo.
  268.  
  269.     To look up locations in MAPIT's database, select TOOLS/Database
  270.     /Lookup/City Gazetteer, enter "Saint" in City, click on Lookup/More
  271.     twice, select Saint Petersburg, FL or any other city from the list of
  272.     matches, and click on Return & Display.  MAPIT will redisplay
  273.     centered on that loation.  <Esc> the redisplay and ZOOM/To Factor x
  274.     entering 300.
  275.  
  276. MAPIT REQUIRES A MOUSE.  This is no problem if you are running Windows
  277. 95.  SKIP THE NEXT SECTION.
  278.  
  279.     Otherwise, unless you have installed a mouse driver BEFORE you start
  280.     Windows 3.x, you will be unable to operate MAPIT.  You can exit MAPIT
  281.     from the keyboard by entering <CTRL>Q.  If you see a cursor when you
  282.     run MAPIT, everything is okay.  SKIP THE NEXT SECTION.

  284. How to Install a Mouse:
  285.  
  286.     Install the mouse driver by issuing the following command at the
  287.     command prompt.
  288.  
  289.         C:> "path"\MOUSE             (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\MOUSE)
  290.  
  291.     where "path" is the path to the directory containing the mouse
  292.     driver.
  293.  
  294.     Place this command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT so MOUSE is always available.
  295.  
  296.     Caution:  Windows 3.x is smart and will show a mouse cursor in
  297.     Windows programs without the mouse driver's being installed.  If the
  298.     cursor doesn't appear when you run MAPIT, <CTRL>Q out and try to edit
  299.     a file with the standard DOS editor from the DOS prompt (EDIT
  300.     VENDINFO.DIZ).  If you don't have a mouse cursor in the editor, the
  301.     driver isn't loaded. Try loading it from the DOS prompt as above, and
  302.     if that works, add the same command near the end of your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  303.     but before any call to WINdows.
